If you have been reading the bulletins coming out then you have heard of the Modern Post. The first facility in Canada Post to be modernized will be the new Winnipeg plant in 2010. With this new technology will come a number of changes for the members. There will be less people needed to do the work we do now as Canada Post continues to replace people with machines. Winnipeg will delete 191 full time workers as well as 9 part time positions through natural attrition (retirement, resignations, transfers, etc.) Over and above the loss of positions for our members this will also create problems for members who need to be accommodated as there will be less sortation done manually. Letter carriers will be on the street longer as the new sequencing machines will be sorting the mail for them. National is putting forth Modern Post demands: · that Winnipeg be used as a pilot project to determine what works and what does not · to have Health & Safety studies done on all machines and delivery processes · to try and minimize delivery for letter carriers · extend rest periods for letter carriers to 15 minutes · ensure that the new standards are realistic for those who need accommodations. Saskatoon is scheduled to be modernized in the spring of 2011. The local will be staying in close contact with Winnipeg to learn as much as we can once they are up and running. Stay tuned for updates.
